The Weather Company is pleased to offer global lightning data from the World Wide Lightning Network (WWLLN) through a redistribution arrangement with Weather Decision Technologies, Inc. The World Wide Lightning Location Network was the first and is the longest running, truly global lightning detection network. The patented WWLLN sensors are capable of detecting lightning stroke sferics from more than 10,000 km away, enabling full global lightning detection. The WWLLN offers the following capabilities:
Approximately 55 sensors uniformly spaced throughout the globe;
Location accuracy of less than 9 km worldwide;
Detection efficiency of 20-40% for high amplitude strokes;
Timing accuracy of microseconds;
Detections available within one minute.
For many global regions, lightning information is critical as other weather data sources are not available. WWLLN locates over 25 million lightning stokes per month throughout the world and identifies over 90 percent of all active thunderstorms in real-time. The capabilities of the World Wide Lightning Location Network make its data an important component of aviation, marine, research and safety applications.
